Hanging Gates
Scrap Metal Gate at Little Pond Gardens
I’ve been installing some gates and learning a ton in the process.
There’s a lot to it. Its got to swing well and have clearance and not sag over time. It’s got to be beautiful but also practical.
In the building of Little Pond Gardens I’ve probably hung 8 gates by now. I really nailed one at The Plant in the new field.
I’ve also botched a few installs. Maybe they look great at first and then a couple years of gravity has them sunk into the ground - almost impossible to open.
I enjoy the challenge.
Local Cedar Posts + Scrap Metal Gate
Recently I just got a circle gate up in the new Arts District at The Plant and it made me think about how these gates are a bit of a symbol of the project.
They’ve been a staple in the landscape for my entire life. My dad came up with this design and its a gate made from a spool that used to hold fiberoptic conduit.
One time, when we were kids, Dad was working on a project. The gate wasn’t secured yet and almost fell on my brother, Zafer as he rode his bicycle. It was a close call.
So I was just reminiscing as I was drilling the cedars I fished out of the woods.
I feel grateful for the work. I love the reuse of the scrap metal and the big, stately circles in the landscape.
It feels good to take something that might’ve been landfilled, and turn it into a piece of art that will also improve the project.
